ACT 1 - 05 - Chorus - Squaws

The Chorus of Squaws enter, led by Falling Feather, Singing Arrow, and Dancing Dew. They are busily assembling baskets, sewing, and doing other domestic work.

Squaws:

No Indian Maiden ever yet was born
To live a carefree life of joy and ease.
Our work is long and hard from early morn
And rest comes only when our husbands please.

Singing Arrow:

We sew and cook
And never look
As if we have complaint.
We wash and dry
And always try
To manage our constraint.

We tend and fix
And bake and mix
And dust the tepee floors.
We clean and shine
And never whine
About our daily chores.

Squaws:

We push ourselves to every brink!
No time to stop! No time to think!

Falling Feather:

This beaver skin needs mending.
It has a nasty tear.
The garden plot needs tending.
The weeds are everywhere.
The tepee needs a cleaning.
It's looking pretty sad.
The wheat needs constant screening
To keep the good from bad.
We have to do the cooking.
Each brave eats like a bear.
And then if no one's looking
We'll stop to breathe some air.

Squaws:

We push ourselves to every brink!
No time to stop! No time to think!

No Indian Maiden ever yet ...etc.
