(Enter Fountain, David, and Daisy)
Fount: Flying Squirrel!
Squir: Your Majesty?
Fount: The completion of the wedding ceremony is at hand and I wanted
to know, ahead of time and as a personal favorto me, if there's
any chance of another interruption.
Squir: None what-ever! To be sure, the gods approve and no one and no
thing will stop the happy union today.
Fount: (aside to Squirrel) Flying Squirrel, listen to me. How would you like
to perform another love spell? That ward of yours follows us around
everywhere. It is neither proper nor enjoyable. Can you do something?
Squir: The matter will have my immediate attention. (to Daisy) Daisy, haven't
you been neglecting your studies lately?
Daisy: (sarcasticly) Oh, no, my guardian! I'm memorized all the incantations
and spells for today's lesson, completed all the lab experiments for
the week, and read three months in advance in all the text books you've
assigned to me.
Squir: Oh, you're a fine student.
David: I'm sure you have reason to be especially proud of her.
Squir: I do. That is why I'm giving her this difficult assignment. (sits
her down) I want you to sit here until you've perfected the technique
of reading the constellations in the daytime - and not a word out of
you until!
(exit all but Daisy)
Daisy: Reading constellations in the daytime! I don't even know what a
constellation is but there must be one around her somewhere (looks
around). And I suppose as soon as I learn to read them in the daytime
he'll be expecting me to read them at night! Anything to keep me away
from David.
Canoe: (enters) Daisy, I've been thinking about you and David.
Daisy: There's a surprise.
Canoe: And I have the perfect solution.
Daisy: You do?
Canoe: Yes, it's simple. Firsly, you expose your guardian, Flying Squirrel
as a fake.
Daisy: And just suppose he isn't a fake?
Canoe: (laughs) That's what this experiment will determine. As I was saying,
firstly, you expose your guardian, Flying Squirrel, as a fake. This
consequently means that it is impossible for him to cast spells. If
he cannot cast spells, he could not have magically brought David and
Fountain together and if he did not magically bring David and Fountain
together, he has not honored his a contract. If he has not honored his
contract then he must marry Fountain himself, leaving David free to
marry you.
Daisy: (interested) And if Flying Squirrel really was a fake, and I say if,
if he really was a fake and I exposed him, how would I ever reconcile
myself to the tribe's wrath that would fall upon him when they discover
his deception?
Canoe: Daisy dear, this plan allows for no wrath because upon marrying
Fountain, Flying Squirrel becomes royalty himself and no one can
touch him!
Daisy: (after some thought) And all I have to do is expose Flying Squiirrel
as a fake? He is a fake, you know.
Canoe: I knew it! I knew it!
Daisy: But stay! What about the wrath that falls upon me when the tribe
realizes my part in this?
Canoe: That's a good point. The only solution lies in somehow getting Flying
Squirrel to expose himself and you, being young and passing
innocent, can be just as shocked as everyone else at his confession.
Do you think you can manage that?
Daisy: I can't allow myself the luxury of thinking. I simply must!
